Beware: Telegram-based Crypto Scam Fleeces Chandigarh Uber Driver

telegram Jul 28, 2025

In a startling revelation that has raised alarms in cybersecurity circles, a 46-year-old Chandigarh resident found himself ensnared in a web of deceit, orchestrated through the seemingly innocuous messaging app, Telegram. Bhajan Singh, an Uber driver living in Sector 45D, became the latest victim of an elaborate cryptocurrency scam.

The Heart of the Deception

The masquerade began innocently enough in December 2024. Singh encountered a Telegram user, @Ayushthakur_Hentor1, who promised lucrative returns through a cryptocurrency investment platform named UCoin. The lure proved too tempting as Singh, armed with trust, embarked on tasks and transactions, transferring significant sums.

A Trail of Empty Promises and Phantom Deposits

Initially, the ploy involved small returns, a clever tactic to bolster Singh’s confidence in the scheme. It wasn’t long before the real trap was sprung - claims of ‘money on hold’ pressured him to pony up more funds. Singh, believing larger investment would unlock his frozen assets, succumbed, only to watch helplessly as over Rs 6.58 lakh vanished into thin air.

In response to Singh’s harrowing ordeal, an FIR was lodged against the culprits under multiple Sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), entrusting Head Constable Dharminder Singh with the investigation. The aim: tracking down and bringing to justice the masterminds behind this digital fraud.

A Word of Caution from the Cyber Cell

As the investigation unfolds, the Cyber Cell has broadcasted a crucial advisory to the public. With the growing complexity of cyber scams, vigilance is non-negotiable. Victims are urged to report such incidents instantly, dialing 1930 or visiting their nearest police precinct. According to The Tribune, awareness and swift action are our first shields against these cyber predators.

The Price of Digital Naivety

Singh’s experience is a cautionary tale, reminding everyone of the lurking dangers in the digital financial world. It’s a stark reminder that trust, once a celebrated virtue, is now a coveted currency, often exploited in the hands of those with malicious intent.

Community-wide Call to Action

Cybersecurity experts and law enforcement are advocating for community awareness campaigns. The mission? Equip citizens with the knowledge to distinguish between genuine opportunities and carefully crafted traps. In Bhajan Singh’s story, the loopholes in awareness became acutely evident, igniting a call for a collective bolstering of defenses.

In the ever-evolving digital landscape, Singh’s misfortune is a clarion call, urging society to up its game in both awareness and response to cyber threats, promising no more victims fall prey to the shadows lurking in the digi-sphere.
