twitter Nov 21, 2025

In a stunning turn of events, British hacker Joseph O’Connor has been sentenced to surrender an astronomical £4.1 million, a fraction of his gains from a daring Bitcoin scam. His notorious escapade involved hijacking the Twitter accounts of high-profile individuals, including Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Elon Musk. O’Connor, a mastermind behind this audacious operation, executed what is now known as the “giveaway scam,” captivating global attention.

The Digital Heist

It all began in July 2020, when O’Connor, operating under the alias PlugwalkJoe, seized control of over 130 Twitter accounts. Collaborating with a group of young accomplices, he delved into Twitter’s internal systems, exploiting insider information gathered through cunning social engineering tactics. Their ultimate goal: lure unsuspecting followers into transferring Bitcoin, with the promise of a profitable return.

The Anatomy of a Scam

The hackers expertly impersonated celebrities with tweets enticing followers to participate in a supposed crypto windfall. The deception was frightfully compelling, leading thousands to believe in a too-good-to-be-true opportunity. Between July 15 and 16, 2020, a staggering 426 transactions were processed, amounting to over 12.86 BTC – now valued at $1.2 million.

From Gaming to Crime

Investigations revealed O’Connor’s connections born from the online gaming world, particularly Call of Duty. This virtual fraternity became the breeding ground for conspiracies that led to significant digital thefts. The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) played a crucial role in uncovering the extent of O’Connor’s activities, securing the recovery of 42 Bitcoin and other illicit digital currencies.

A Message to Cyber Criminals

Adrian Foster from the CPS underscored that engaging in cybercrime, regardless of a domestic conviction, does not absolve perpetrators from responsibility. “Even when someone is not convicted in the UK,” Foster stated, “we are still able to ensure they do not benefit from their criminality.” A stern reminder that justice transcends borders in the digital age.

The Wider Web of Cyber Intrigue

O’Connor’s repercussions echo in broader circles as cyber incidents remain a persistent global menace. Similar schemes, where hackers hijack authority, highlight the need for robust cybersecurity measures. As stated in BBC, the tale of Joseph O’Connor serves both as a cautionary tale and a testament to the relentless pursuit of justice in cyberspace.
