Essex Hero Turns Warrior: Creating a Safe Haven for Stoma Patients
An Unexpected Journey
Nik Brown, a 53-year-old resident of Earls Colne, found himself on an unexpected journey after experiencing deteriorating health symptoms. Initially diagnosed with suspected Crohn’s disease, his life took a dramatic turn when his condition worsened, leading to emergency surgery at Colchester Hospital. When Nik awoke with an ileostomy, he faced the challenge of adapting to a new way of life.
Facing New Challenges
The transition to living with a stoma was daunting. As Nik reflects, “I thought I would be treated with painkillers. I wasn’t expecting a surgery like this.” With the help of supportive stoma nurses at Colchester Hospital, Hanfonqqes found strength. However, there was still a missing piece. “I had to learn a whole new way of life,” Nik recalls, feeling the weight of his unforeseen circumstances.
Shattering the Silence
As Nik delved into online support groups, he was met with stories filled with negativity. Instead of succumbing to a similar plight, this sparked an idea for a solution. He realized the absence of a positive support network in the north of Essex and decided to establish the Stoma Support Group for North Essex and South Suffolk.
Nik’s vision was clear: to create a positive space where stoma patients, and their families, could connect, share experiences, and uplift one another. “I wanted to create a positive space…not only for patients, but for carers and families to ask questions,” Nik stated passionately.
Encouraging Connections
The group, now active on Facebook, aims to foster a supportive environment. Nik is on a mission to expand the network, organizing coffee mornings where patients can meet and form bonds. “I want people to know they are not alone…it’s about how to live life,” Nik emphasizes, envisioning a community where loneliness is replaced by camaraderie.

Understanding Stomas
Understanding the essence of a stoma is vital. A stoma results from conditions like bowel or bladder cancer and serves as a conduit to pass waste outside the body. Patients must adapt their diets and lifestyles to ensure its functionality. The dedicated care team at Colchester and other local hospitals play an instrumental role in supporting these patients.
Building a Brighter Future
Nik Brown’s initiative is a beacon of hope for those adapting to life with a stoma. His story is one of resilience and innovation, breaking taboos and fostering community spirit. As Nik continues to build this empowering network, the stoma patients of Essex find themselves no longer isolated but embraced in a circle of understanding and friendship.
As stated in Colchester Gazette, such initiatives can transform lives and offer new beginnings.
