Harmony's Enduring Legacy: 165 Years of Barbershop Unity
Close your eyes and imagine the harmonious blend of voices resonating throughout the years—a timeless art form that forges bonds across generations. The enduring legacy of barbershop-style groups is a testament to the power of music in community building. This past month, three local ensembles celebrated a combined 165 years of harmonic fellowship at the 2025 Barbershop Chorus Anniversary Show. Let’s explore the heartfelt journey of Tower City Chorus, Elyria Golden Cascade Chordsmen, and Lake Erie Lodge, as they honor their milestones and invite new members to carry on the tradition.
A Nostalgic Celebration
The journey began with the Tower City Chorus, which turned 85 years old this year, adding richness to the barbershop tapestry. Meanwhile, the Elyria Golden Cascade Chordsmen celebrated their 80th anniversary. Not to be left behind in making history, the Lake Erie Lodge marked a prestigious feat, becoming the 14th lodge worldwide recognized by the Society for the Preservation and Propagation of Barbershop Quartets.
Fellowship Through Harmony
For Al Downey of Pittsfield Township, barbershop singing is more than a pastime. “I’ve sung in several quartets and there is just a sense of fellowship with it,” said Downey. His passion extends beyond himself, as it’s become a family affair he shares with his son. According to Chronicle Telegram, this cherished tradition of singing brings joy not only to the performers but to their audiences as well.
George Szent-Kiraly from North Olmsted reignites old school memories when reflecting on his journey with the Elyria Golden Cascade Chordsmen. A fan of quartets since high school, Szent-Kiraly finally found his platform in 1995. “I loved the way the singing sounded,” he reminisces, encapsulating the allure that continues to draw in new members.
Rising Above Challenges
While the passage of time has seen its fair share of challenges, including an aging membership and the impact of COVID-19, the groups persist with undying passion. “Getting people involved in anything is a challenge,” remarked Downey. Yet these groups continue to thrive, uniting their spirits and their voices to bring music to nursing homes and local events, spreading joy wherever they go.
Future Harmonies Await
As the groups continue to perform at various events such as the upcoming Holiday Sing-out at Gale’s Garden Center and Christmas Connection, they extend an open hand and warm invitation for new singers to join their ranks. No experience is necessary, and all ages are welcome to cement their place in a tradition that promises laughter, camaraderie, and, most importantly, beautiful music.
Join the Legacy
George Szent-Kiraly warmly invites prospective members to visit a rehearsal, “Men and boys of any age who like to sing are welcome.” Rehearsals are held every Monday at Solid Rock Community Church in Elyria. Interested voices will not only find a hobby but a family dedicated to preserving the melodic charm of barbershop harmony.
In a world constantly changing, one thing remains steadfast—the harmony of voices, united under the banner of barbershop music. Join them, and add your voice to the enduring symphony.
