Indian Cyber Sleuths Thwart Chinese Syndicate with Stunning Arrests
In a groundbreaking operation, Jharkhand’s Cyber Crime Branch of the Crime Investigation Bureau (CID) achieved a significant victory against cybercrime by arresting seven agents working for Chinese cyber criminals. These agents were instrumental in facilitating a complex network of fraudulent digital transactions that stretched across national borders.
A High-Stakes Raid in Ranchi
In a daring effort, cyber sleuths raided a hotel in Ranchi, acting on a confidential tip about organized criminal activities focusing on digital investments and scams. The CID’s official release highlighted the arrest of seven cyber criminals, the seizure of 12 mobile phones, 11 laptops, 14 ATMs, and over 60 chat logs from WhatsApp and Telegram. According to The New Indian Express, these seizures reveal intricate details about their operations.
Unraveling the Web of Cyber Deception
Upon arrest, it was discovered that the individuals were Indian agents collaborating with known Chinese entities such as Moonpay, Dragonpay, Superpay, and Mangopayindia. The investigation unveiled that these criminals provided mule bank accounts to Chinese syndicates, which were then used in scams throughout the country.
The Malicious Mechanism
Further investigation revealed that the Chinese syndicate deployed a malicious application through Telegram to Indian agents. Once installed on SIM cards, these applications captured and transmitted sensitive banking information, such as OTPs and bank alerts, to Chinese servers. This allowed operatives to remotely access banking accounts and syphon off large sums of money, robbing victims of their savings.
Deciphering the Digital Footprints
As the investigation continues, CID has logged several complaints on the NCPCR portal, relating to financial scams and digital fraud further linking these accounts to the arrested agents. Authorities have traced 60 mule bank accounts integral to the Chinese syndicate’s schemes, a testament to the far-reaching implications of this criminal network.
