In an era where messages spread like wildfire, misinformation can create unnecessary panic. Recently, a viral WhatsApp message caused quite a stir, claiming that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) ordered banks to stop dispensing Rs 500 notes from ATMs by September 2025. However, the government has been quick to quell the rumors, asserting that these claims are baseless.

The Viral Message and Its Claim

According to the misleading message, by March 31, 2026, 90 percent of ATMs would cease dispensing Rs 500 notes, with a full halt by September 30. It also advised people to start “liquidating” their Rs 500 notes, suggesting that only Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes would be available.

Government and RBI’s Response

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) stepped in to debunk this viral hoax, stating categorically that the RBI never issued such instructions. Rs 500 notes remain legal tender, and their availability in ATMs continues unaffected.

Public Advisory

In a clarifying post on platform X, the PIB emphasized the importance of verifying financial updates through credible sources. “Don’t fall for such misinformation. Always verify news from official sources before believing or sharing it!” they advised.

Previous Incidents

This isn’t the first instance of such rumors. A previous message with similar claims circulated last month and was also debunked by the PIB’s Fact Check unit. The recurrence of such hoaxes underscores the critical need for vigilance in disseminating unconfirmed news.

Rely on Reliable Sources

As advised by officials, always depend on trusted platforms, like the RBI’s official statements or the PIB’s fact-checking handle, for accurate information, especially regarding critical financial matters. As stated in ABP Live English, safeguarding information authenticity is more crucial than ever in today’s digital age.

In conclusion, the government has firmly refuted these unfounded claims, ensuring that Rs 500 notes continue to be integral to India’s cash economy. Let us all commit to promoting verified facts and silencing misinformation.
