Pakistan Demands Global Action to Halt Terrorist Armament

whatsapp Apr 10, 2025

In a world where security dynamics continue to shift and evolve, Pakistan has called upon the international community to take immediate and decisive action to halt the flow of illicit arms to terrorist entities. According to Daily Times, this plea is rooted in the exacerbation of violent attacks by groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), primarily operating from Afghanistan.

A Cross-Border Dilemma

The increased activity of terrorist outfits operating from Afghan soil remains a severe concern as Pakistan endures escalating attacks. Recently, Syed Atif Raza, Counsellor at the Pakistan Mission, raised the alarm at the UN Security Council’s special session dedicated to small arms and light weapons management. His comments painted a grim picture of how these weapons, abandoned in the aftermath of foreign military withdrawals, have found their way into the hands of extremists.

Grave Implications for Regional Security

A report by the Small Arms Survey throws light on the troubling reality of arms trafficking, despite efforts by the Taliban to throttle unauthorized distribution. This adds another layer of complexity to regional stability. The weapons that continue to evade official regulation now serve as tools for non-state military factions, significantly threatening Pakistan’s security infrastructure.

A Menace Feeding on Modern Arsenal

Counsellor Raza’s insights expose a worrying trend: these armed groups have no qualms about using highly sophisticated weapons, thereby intensifying their reign of terror. The TTP alone accounts for a significant majority of terrorism-related deaths in Pakistan, as reported in the Global Terrorism Index 2025. The data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies further amplifies the distressing rise in terror activities.

Collaborative Efforts Urgently Needed

“Pakistan is grappling with continual threats from these factions, armed with modernized arsenals that should not be at their disposal,” said Raza. He strongly urged the international community to take robust measures to recover the vast inventories of arms left vulnerable and make concerted efforts to cut off the supply lines disrupting Pakistan’s path to peace.

The Need for Enhanced Global Cooperation

This urgent call to action comes with an appeal for international cooperation to dismantle the black market of illegal arms. Assigning responsibility, Raza reiterated the dangers posed to regional peace by these modern armaments, implicitly questioning the international community’s inertia toward this burgeoning crisis.

Such a united global effort would be instrumental in reversing the growing tide of terrorist weaponization, hopefully paving the way for a more stable future in this troubled region.
